Auto-Saves

The Visual Builder now keeps auto-saves of your work automatically while you are designing your page. These backups are saved to your database just in case you forget to save or something prevents you from saving.

Just imagine. You have a meeting with your client tomorrow and have promised to deliver the final iteration of their new homepage design. Luckily you have have awoke to a stroke of creative genius, and fueled by a fresh pot of your favorite coffee, you lose yourself in a design trance for hours creating what is perhaps your best work ever! You sit back, cock your head back and forth and take it all in with a smile when the unthinkable happens. Your browser crashes and you realize that in your state of design-induced euphoria, you completely forgot to save! Your heart sinks when you think about having to do it all over again. That magic is gone. You are out of time. There is no way you can build a new design it in time for your deadline tomorrow.

This is where the Visual Builder’s new Auto-Save system steps in to save the day. That whole time you were building your design, Divi was keeping track of your changes and saving each adjustment as an auto-save. These backups were being stored to your database just in case disaster struck. When you re-start your browser and launch the Visual Builder, Divi knows that you forgot to save and gives you the option to restore your lost data.

A similar auto-save system already exists for the standard WordPress post editor, but this functionality is brand new to the Visual Builder. If your computer crashes, your browser closes unexpectedly, or if you just forget to save, you can rest assured knowing that Divi will be there to lend a helping hand.

Browser Backups

In addition to auto-saves, backups of your work are stored in your browser. This provides a second layer of defense in the event that your website goes down or there is an internet issue preventing you from connecting with your server.

Even if you remember to save your work frequently, things can go wrong that prevent those saves from completing successfully. Your internet could go down, your server might be experiencing incremental downtime or a network issue might be causing packet loss between your home network at your hosting company. Even if you are saving frequently, you still need a good internet connection for that data to travel from your browser to your website. That’s where the Visual Builder’s Browser Backups come in. In addition to the auto-saves that are being saved to your website, an additional backup now gets saved in your browser whenever you make a change in the Visual Builder. If your normal saves and auto-saves fail, and you exit the Visual Builder to find that your changes have disappeared, simply launch the Visual Builder again and Divi will detect the browser backup and provide you with the option to restore it.

Failed Save Detection

If everything goes wrong and you just can’t save, the Visual Builder will give you a warning. It monitors manual saves and lets you know if something fails, giving you the option to download a backup of your page so that you can restore it at a later date once your issues have been resolved.

Sometimes everything goes wrong at once. Something outside of Divi’s control might be preventing successful saves, auto-saves and browser backups. Maybe there is a plugin conflict. Perhaps a browser extension is causing problems. Maybe there is a bug in the Visual Builder that we need to fix! Whatever the case, when you try to save your work in the Visual Builder and that save fails, Divi will now detect that the save failed and will warn you that something went wrong. Not only does the Divi let you know that a save failed, it also gives you to option to download a backup of your work so that it can be restored using the Divi Portability System.

Divi Builder Sync

The Divi Builder will now keep saved content in-sync when multiple instances of the builder are active in different tabs. Pop over to the Visual Builder in one tab to make some padding adjustments then head back over the Backend Builder to add a new module without accidentally overwriting your changes.

A few months ago we introduced Divi 3.0 and the all new Visual Builder. This Visual Builder has all the same features as the standard Divi Builder (we now call it the Backend Builder), except that changes are made on the front-end of your site using an all new visual interface.

When we introduced this new interface, we did not predict that many users would prefer to make some changes in the Visual Builder and other changes in the Backend Builder. In hindsight, it seems natural that when both builders are available, a designer’s transition from one interface to another would be incremental. Often times we observe users opening up two tabs for the same page, one instance of the Visual Builder and one instance of the Backend Builder, attempting to use both at the same time. The problem with this, until now, was that if you bounced back and forth between two different tabs and made different changes in each, you would end up overwriting the changes you had made previously. This is not a new problem. The same thing would happen if you opened up two instances of the same page in the WordPress Dashboard. The thing is, no one ever did that before because there was no reason to!

When we thought about this update, and ways to help protect our users from losing their work and wasting their valuable time, we realized that it was important that the Divi Builder adapt to this new user behavior. That’s why we created Divi Builder Sync. This new system keeps multiple instances of the builder that are open in different tabs of your browser in sync. If you make some changes in the Visual Builder, when you open up a tab that has the Backend Builder active for the same page, those updates will be loaded automatically. It works in reverse too. Changes made using the Backend Builder are synced to the Visual Builder. You can bounce back and forth and use both builders however you like without saving your works, and those changes will be synced back and forth to ensure a smooth and error-free editing experience.

Significantly Improved
Saving & Loading Performance

The saving mechanism used by the Visual Builder has been significantly improved, resulting in a ~60% smaller post sizes and 60% faster save times when building with the Visual Builder.

Before

  • Backend Builder Saved Post Size: 8,097 chars
  • Visual Builder Saved Post Size: 18,756 chars
  • Visual Builder Load Object: 151,801 chars
  • Visual Builder Initial Ajax Object: 643,131 chars
  • Visual Builder Save Request Duration: 3.81 sec
  • Visual Builder Save Request Object: 21,208 chars

First of all, these stats have nothing to do with how long your page takes to load on your website or the size of the pages on your website when loaded by your website’s visitors. These stats only showcases the speed at which the Divi Builder loads, the amount data and time it takes to render a page in the builder, and the time it takes to save a page to your database. We are comparing the speed and efficiency of the builder itself, and comparing the Visual Builder to the Backend Builder. As you can see from these stats, when comparing pages saved with the Visual Builder vs the standard Divi Backend Builder, the Visual Builder resulted in much larger save requests due to how much information was gathered and used to render your page inside of the builder. Long story short: The Visual Builder had a lot more going on and it took a lot longer to load than the Backend Builder. Similarly, it took a lot longer to save the page due to the amount of information being sent from your browser to your website (in the example layout above, the Visual Builder was sending 230% more information to the server than the Backend Builder would. That’s a pretty huge difference).

After

After today’s update, the speed and efficiency of the Visual Builder has been greatly improved. In fact, the Visual Builder is now slightly more efficient than the original Divi Backend Builder. This means that the Visual Builder interface will load faster and your changes will save faster. One of the reasons that improving saving performance and reducing the size of the save request is so important is that it can often result in failed saves and timeouts on shared hosts with limited resources.

  • Backend Builder Saved Post Size: 8,097 chars [unchanged]
  • Visual Builder Saved Post Size: 7,449 chars [60% reduction]
  • Visual Builder Load Object: 111,044 chars [27% reduction]
  • Visual Builder Initial Ajax Object: 566,185 chars [12% reduction]
  • Visual Builder Save Request Duration: 1.44 sec [62% reduction]
  • Visual Builder Save Request Object: 8,723 chars [59% reduction]

So what does that all mean exactly? First of all, the Visual Builder post size is now smaller than the Backend Builder’s post size. The Visual Builder loads about ~21% faster than before and the time that it takes to save a page has been reduced by ~62%. That’s more than twice as fast! This means less time wasted waiting around for the loading spinner to fade away, and a much smaller chance that your save will fail on shared hosts with strict resource limits.

  1. AUTO SAVE IS HORRIBLY HHHOOORRRRIIIBBBLYYYYY ANNOYING. HOW TO DISENGAGE IT? IT CONSTANTLY INTERUPTS WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND DISENGAGES THE MOUSE

  2. In the past two days, I’ve been having all kinds of errors.

“An error has occurred while saving your page. Various problems can cause a save to fail, such as a lack of server resources, firewall blockages, plugin conflicts or server misconfiguration. You can try saving again by clicking Try Again, or you can download a backup of your unsaved page by clicking Download Backup. Backups can be restored using the portability system while next editing your page.
Contacting your host and asking them to increase the following PHP variables may help: memory_limit, max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, max_input_time, max_input_vars. In addition, auditing your firewall error log (such as ModSecurity) may reveal false positives that are preventing saves from completing.
Lastly, it is recommend that you temporarily disable all WordPress plugins and browser extensions and try to save again to determine if something is causing a conflict.”

  3. First of all, congratulations on the great work from Germany.
This should excuse my bad english ;-).

With visual builder makes editing a page even fun again!

I’m just about to change my entire customer pages from Weebly to WP,
You come just right to make my work easier. And i save a lot of Money.
    Thank you so much!

But one thing should still get under control.
If you are working in Visual Builder mode, and you changes a site via link in the menü bar, the new page should also start in Visual Builder.

Then a link directly to the builder in the WP menu bar,Start with the Home-Page for example.

It would be good to offer my customers a possibility to open the visual Builder directly after the login at WP without going over the WP backend.
    A plugin maybe?

    Ok i’m dreaming
But you guys show us again and again that nothing is impossible.

    Keep it up

  4. These are great new features. Thanks.

  5. Sync! Yes!!

  6. Now, that’s an amazing work. Thanks

  7. Gotta start by saying I love DIVI!

That said, I’ve burned a ton of hours with hit and miss results trying to get it to run on WPEngine fresh installs.

Tried to keep this in the support forums, but I’m not getting anything helpful.

Posting here because I LOVE this product and want to help get this sorted out.

I can replicate it over and over again, but can’t figure out the problem.

Have the support plugin installed… Just need someone to reach out and I’m happy to help.

No hurry… Just need to get this solved definitively.

Did I mention I LOVE DIVI;-)

    • Hey Donavon I’ve just heard back from support. We found your username/account by the email you’ve used here. There doesn’t appear to be an open ticket but we would love to help you out. If you could open up a ticket and share your video link there that would greatly help us help you out with this.

    • Hey Donavon, I’m following up with support right now.

  8. Hello,

We are using divi to run the “Shopify Ecommerce Plugin” on multiple site from the same collection. We are having trouble loading the Shopify app whenever a a different site is loaded from the 16 sites that have the same collection.

This is the error that is produced: Fetch API cannot load https://widgets.shopifyapps.com/v4/adapter_props?shop=blissedoutgeek.myshopify.com. The ‘Access-Control-Allow-Origin’ header has a value ‘https://www.universethings.com’ that is not equal to the supplied origin. Origin ‘https://www.dolphinthings.com’ is therefore not allowed access. Have the server send the header with a valid value, or, if an opaque response serves your needs, set the request’s mode to ‘no-cors’ to fetch the resource with CORS disabled.

Would you have a simple fix for this?

    Thanks,
    Stan

    • Hi Stan, please create a support ticket in our forum here: elegantthemes.com/forum

  9. You are simply the best!! As a client of yours I’m always amazed by your work
    Cheers from Italy 😉

  10. This looks awesome.

  11. Great Work again from elegantthemes!

  12. The Auto-Save feature is a great addition – there have been so many times I’ve been careless with the visual builder and lost hours of work. I’ll have to check out the tabbed syncing – if it works as expected, that will really fix the workflow in Divi for me. Thanks!

  13. Hi Nick.

Thanks to you and your team for all the great work you’ve done on this new release 🙂 !
Could you please, add the functionnality “Copy style” and “Paste Style” on the “Backend Builder” too. It will be really cool for old school like me to be able to copy style between elements like on the “Visual builder” 😀 !!

    TIA.

    Pierre

  14. Great news and truly useful features!

What about the Extra theme, does it have this functionality too ?

I understand that Divi is the flagship product, but I somehow get a feeling that Extra is a bit two steps behind. Do you have any plans in merging these two themes, as they do have many things in common ?

  15. Good news, thanks! The reason for opening backend builder is that if I have a row with say, one line of text then I cannot click on the add row or add module plus sign. It’s because it sooner disappear than I could click on it. Do you plan to make changes on the placing of plus signs in VB? Stay there longer or bring it closer or some other way to make it stay (eg. holding CTRL or ALT).

    • you can double click on any section, row or mod to pull up the settings.

I use to have the same problem until I read this tip above from “Dustin Falgout”

  16. Hi Nick
This is great but divi seems to have a major problem saving and reimporting custom CSS in Json files. When will this bug be fixed?

  17. Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in …

How can I downgrade to the previous Divi version?

  18. So what do I do with this error that I’ve been wasting time on? I can’t seem to fix it. I deactivated my plugins. I have Siteground techs looking into it. So now I guess it’s a standard thing related to this theme release???

    Your Save Has Failed
An error has occurred while saving your page. Various problems can cause a save to fail, such as a lack of server resources, firewall blockages, plugin conflicts or server misconfiguration. You can try saving again by clicking Try Again, or you can download a backup of your unsaved page by clicking Download Backup. Lastly, it is recommend that you temporarily disable all WordPress plugins and browser extensions and try to save again to determine if something is causing a conflict.

  19. Awesome work Nick!!!

  20. Keep the good work Nick! I love ET, my 4 year in a row

  21. Amazing! This is more than AWESOME WORK! Well done Nick and Divi’s team.

  22. Hi akl and thanks a lot Et for this upgrade!

Question: in your upgrades do you also include minor bug fixes?
If yes, where can we find a detailed list?
    Thanks

  23. Awesome work. Divi is quite simply the best theme available on the market. Huge fan!

  24. Fantastic update, just loaded it.
Question: Will this affect the Child theme in any way?

    Thanks for a great product!!!!!

  25. Is there going to be an autoupdate? Mine fails everytime. It keeps saying the theme has to be upgraded.

  26. Love it. Running DIVI 3.0 on the brand new kismetpodcast.com now.

One thing I’d love to see would be the ability to set a timer for modules. For example, if you’re running a promotion on a homepage, you could have a call to action go live or go off for a set period of time. So, as a webmaster, you don’t have to edit a page when a promotion goes through midnight or something like that.

  27. That´s why I love Divi and the ET team. You guys, strategically, decided to improve the WordPress marketing and server experience. This is what WordPress ever lacked.

Instead of bloating the theme with a lot of useless modules… you created a solid framework for every designer to start to work.

    Congratulations.

  28. Are we to take it that the Auto-save feature will cause database bloat?

It has been asked a couple of times in these comments but no definitive answer given!

    • No it wont. Only one auto-save is ever stored for each post, so there wont be any compounding effect that creates notable bloat.

  29. Aloha Nick,
These enhancements will greatly help my productivity and reduce my frustrations! Thank you and the Elegant Themes crew for their dedication to making the whole Divi experience delightful and rewarding.

    — Erik @Spaceably

  30. I’m extremely happy with Divi! It would be great if you guys released a new layout or section on a weekly basis 🙂

    • Be sure to subscribe to our Divi Daily newsletter. We often release free layout packs and we hope to do so more often in the future!

      • I check your blog every single day, and have it bookmarked 🙂 You guys have already released some great layouts and it’s much appreciated.

I feel that releasing layouts may also results in less support tickets being opened in your forum because essentially all the user needs to do is replace the text & images.

        Thanks again!

  31. This is something I’ve been highly anticipating. Being the tab-hoarder and ADD individual that I am, I have had situations where pages didn’t save after a lot of changes–for whatever reason. These features will be very helpful. Thanks for all the work you guys are putting in, and I’m looking forward to even more features in the future!

  32. Awesome! Thanks guys 🙂

  33. This is my Divi wishlist come true!
    Really enjoying the creative experience.

Thank you very much. Keep up the excellent work.

  34. where can I download this – or will it be a part of teh general Divi Update? thansk for a great theme!!

    • You should see an update notification for Divi 3.0.35 in your dashboard.

  35. Great update! Divi continues to grow and shine!

  36. This is awesome 🙂 Any news on the developer version?

    • There will be news coming soon. The next thing on our to-do list is to release a new version of the Divi Builder plugin, including the Visual Builder.

      • Cool.
Looking forward to see the performance improvements on 3.1.

        • Amen, Nahuai, amen! Performance is the only thing lacking in Divi at this point.

          • Let’s hope they keep their promise to focus on performance.

I’m optimistic, they are doing a great work overall.

      • Ok cool, it the thing I’m most excited about, really hope it soon 🙂

      • I thought DIVI 3.1 was supposed to come before the new website though?

  37. Divi has become pretty unbeatable, but this feature is just unique, I don’t think any other theme out there has this or even close!!

I’m so glad I bought the lifetime access and that haven’t switched to any other theme since Dive came out!! It has been a better improvement after better improvement!!

    Best theme, huge fan!!!

  38. Just wow. Constantly blown away by what you’re producing Elegant Themes. Thanks very much.

  39. So all these enhancements are included in Divi 3.0 which includes the Divi Builder? When will they be available? I LOVE DIVI !!

    • They are already available in Divi 3.0.35 🙂

  40. This theme keeps getting better. In my book, it was already the best theme on the market and I’m amazed how you guys keep pushing it! 🙂

Thanks for all your work, you’re the reason I got a successful business!

  41. Great job. And excellent article for those who work DIVI

    Thank you

  42. Big kiss! The little sister kind, but still… awesome work!!

    • Yes, PLEASE!

  43. Super cool!

On a side note – Nick Roach, what shampoo and conditioner do you use? Your hair always looks awesome!

  44. This is all wonderful, and much appreciated. However, we’re still waiting on the DIVI Builder plugin with the visual builder. The plugin has virtually been abandoned since the visual builder was released, and during the launch of 3.0, you said the plugin would be getting the visual builder functionality in a matter of DAYS. It’s been many months.

I love the DIVI builder, and would love to use the plugin more with my sites and client sites that don’t always use one of the ET themes. But I’ve been very disheartened that there still hasn’t been an update on the plugin since August.

Sorry to be negative. This really is a great release. But nobody seems to want to address this, so I just wanted to mention it. Please let us know an ETA on the plugin update! And sincerely, keep up the good work! I really do appreciate it all, despite my complaint.

    Brent

    • I just read above that you are shooting for Wednesday with a builder plugin release, which would be awesome! Please don’t take my complaining as me being unhappy overall. I’m definitely not! Just itching to get my hands on the plugin to use on other sites. I love the visual builder workflow, so I want to spread the love to other sites.

      Thanks for the updates!

      Brent

  45. Thank you for the update. I have installed it in my website and I found it a little annoying to have to click ‘Leave’ button every time I want to leave the page after I have done with the editing.

How do I turn the auto-saved and browser backup off? Thanks

    • If you are getting that prompt, in means that Divi did not save successfully, or that you made some changes after saving that have not yet been saved. This isn’t related to browser backups or auto-saves. You may want to look at your browser console logs for any errors after pressing the save button, and open a ticket in our support forums so we can take a look.

  46. This is great thanks! Already had clients complaining work was not saved 🙁

FYI: for me at least, it is not the fact I rather work from within the original backend, but in some instances it is easier to.

One example would be when you have a Section and a Row, where there is no padding, and the Row is full width, you can’t get to the Section settings. Also, the settings tabs overlap when you remove too much padding. So it is easier to go into the backend.

    • Just a quick tip: you can double click on any section/row/module to access its settings 🙂

  47. I am so glad I could be of help to you Nick. You have been reading my mind and implementing everything I think of that would make DIVI even better. Feel free to continue to read my mind!

Seriously, this is amazing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worked on something and missed a step somehow and failed to save or WordPress got me into 64 different tabs and a change was missed. Thank you.

  48. Hi there,
All this sound very interesting to me but… for another reason:
Building on this code, you should be able to provide some features enabling to update a page from a local site to a production site.

This would be the usage scenario:
Starting with a local site and a production being “identical”:
I’m working on a page of my local site. I do some edits and tests locally.
Once I’m done, a menu allows me to synch this page to the production site.

Built-in tools allowing to update a production site from a local site without the pain of having to do a full export-replace URL-import would really be a fantastic addition to Divi, not to say a killer, and would make Divi unique on the market.

I know it is not that easy and that a given page may have many dependencies located outside the page itself (css, menus, scripts, images…) but still, it is probably doable. And even less technically challenging for you guys than the Visual Builder!

Impatiently looking forward for your feedback on this suggestion…

    Chris

    • I like this alot!!!

      • Hi Elegant Themes / Nick,

        Any feedback on this?

        Chris

  49. Great work! This is what I needed, thank you so much)

  50. Really pleased to hear the save process has been improved as i’ve been having quite a lot of issues with pages not saving properly.

When i’ve gone back to edit a post to correct spelling errors with Grammarly extension for chrome and then saved the post, the corrections i’ve made are lost when i reopen the page later. Funnily enough this doesn’t happen with the text editor, only when i use the visual builder.

I’ve also had issues with saving a template. When i load that template on my live site (after developing it on XAMPP) the heading fonts and colors i’ve specified aren’t always there and i have to go and redo them.

This has been my biggest frustration with the visual builder, having to go back and redo things i’ve already done and thought i had saved.

Hopefully this new update fixes these problems!

  51. Hello there.

What do I need to do to enable or acquire these new (and wonderful) features with Divi.
    I’m using 3.0 — please advise!

    Thank you kindly!

    • go to your dashboard and click on updates, it should show the new updated divi for you to download.

  52. Pleased to have such backup features. And, looking forward to the new Divi Plugin update with Visual Builder!!

  53. Great!!! It is really helpful, on more than one occasion I saw on the stages you mention. Thanks for continuing to improve DIVI;)

  54. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. It’s so easy to forget to save and lately I have had a few browser crashes. This will simplify my life!!!

  55. Many congrats Nick and team.
I wondered what you guys were working on 🙂

  56. Hello, Could you pls advise what will be new plugin version number ?

    • The upgraded features only target the live builder. The later can only be used with Divi theme 🙂

The theme version with the upgrade is v3.0.35.

      • Thank you for your reply and how can i upgrade theme ? sorry i am not familiar to much 🙂

        • Oh! and make sure you are using a child theme or an uncustomized 🙂 Just to avoid any risks losing any additional coding on your theme’s files.

If you’ve been only using Divi’s builder, you will be fine.

  57. Totally awesome thanks for that!

  58. That Divi Sync sounds awesome. I always have to close my tab of the backend to make sure I don’t screw up my changes from the front end builder.

  59. Hi guys — loving Divi. Is this feature automatically in the version I’m using? How do I tell? Is it in 3.0 to begin with?

    • You will need to be on 3.0.35 for these new features.

  60. This is fantastic! Thank you! I’m continually in awe of your ingenuity.

  61. Thrilled that I got on the Divi train! So happy to be a member here at Elegant Themes. Love to see the work going into Divi!

My only request would be, can we make ANY of this pour over directly to Extra!? I would like to use EXTRA and DIVI interchangeably! Custom modules, sections, CSS, Visual Builder, etc.

    PLEASE!

    • I am of the same opinion, DIVI and EXTRA must have the same characteristics and modules.

    • See the 4th comment and Nick’s reply…once they release the Divi Builder PLUGIN, you’ll be able use it with any theme 🙂

      • Unfortunately it doesn’t work with every theme. I’ve tried to use it with some and it doesn’t always work.

  62. It is awesome to see you guys working on new features all the time. Thanks a lot for that!

  63. I experienced this on Saturday and have been reticent to touch the Visual Builder since, so this couldn’t have come at a better time. You read my mind!

I’ll get back on the horse. ?

    • Happened to me yesterday as I worked front and backend and accidentally overridden my design

      • Happened to me yesterday as well. Minor changes, but they were text re-writes and I am not sure I can remember how I worded it.

So happy to hear this news!! Thank you!

  64. Great news Nick! One quick question, is there any cleanup mechanism so that the browser and the database don’t fill up with countless auto-save versions? If there is not, is there a maintenance regimen you would recommend?

    • There’s only one auto-save for each page/post. New auto-saves will overwrite old auto-saves.
For browser backups, those are available as long as you keep the browser window open. Once it’s closed the backup will be lost/deleted.

  65. Fantastic updates! Thank you for all you do!

  66. Great Job! Does it remove the saved instances from the database? Is this going to bulk the db up?

    Thanks for the fantastic work!

    • There’s only one auto-save for each page/post. New auto-saves will overwrite old auto-saves.

      • Ah, thank you, @Faycal Boutam! That was my biggest concern – the database getting too bulked up with all the auto-saves. I use the Revision Control plugin to limit the number of auto-saves in the WordPress editor and didn’t want Divi to render its purpose moot.

    • Shooting for Wednesday 🙂

      • Hey Nick! Any word on when it will be coming out?

      • It’s Friday, nothing yet?

      • Any update on when the visual builder will added to the standalone plugin? Hopefully soon? 🙂

      • Is that launched?

Where can I download it from?

      • ¡Awesome!
I’ve been waiting for the update for months…

      • Great news! Thanks.

      • That’s good news!

      • Awesome, can’t wait! Thanks, Nick!

  69. Great work Nick and the team.

  70. I love it! Thanks for this great update!! I was getting frustrated with the builder because of this kind of hiccups. Now I can work without any worries! <3
